WebPompallier House is a nineteenth-century building located in Russell, New Zealand which once served as the headquarters to the French Catholic mission to the Western Pacific. It is named after Jean Baptiste Pompallier, the first vicar apostolic to visit New Zealand, who founded a number of missions in the North Island. WebBishop Pompallier – who was associated with the Society of Mary – was this country’s first Catholic bishop, serving from 1838 to 1868, when he returned to his native France. He took part in negotiations at Waitangi in 1840 before the signing of the Treaty, and published some of the first printed Māori prayer books and bibles.
